چکیده

We consider the random phone call model introduced by Demers et al.,which is a well-studied model for information dissemination in networks. One basic protocol in this model is the so-called Push protocol that proceeds in synchronous rounds. Starting with a single node which knows of a rumor, every informed node calls in each round a random neighbor and informs it of the rumor. The Push-Pull protocol works similarly, but additionally every uninformed node calls a random neighbor and may learn the rumor from it. It is well-known that both protocols need Θ(log n) rounds to spread a rumor on a complete network with n nodes. Here we are interested in how much the spread can be speeded up by enabling nodes to make more than one call in each round. We propose a new model where the number of calls of a node is chosen independently according to a probability distribution R. We provide both lower and upper bounds on the rumor spreading time depending on statistical properties of R such as the mean or the variance (if they exist). In particular, if R follows a power law distribution with exponent β ∈ (2, 3), we show that the Push-Pull protocol spreads a rumor in Θ(log log n) rounds. Moreover, when β = 3, the PushPull protocol spreads a rumor in Θ( logn log logn) rounds. the electronic journal of combinatorics 22(1) (2015), #P1.23 1

Technical Report: Randomized Rumor Spreading with Fewer Phone Calls∗

Rumor spreading algorithms are a useful way to disseminate information to a group of players in the presence of faults. Rumors are either spread by pushing, in which the players knowing the rumor call other players at random and spread the rumor, or by pulling, where players who do not know the rumor call other players and ask for any new rumors. The efficiency of the algorithms is often measur...

Gossip vs. Markov Chains, and Randomness-Efficient Rumor Spreading

We study gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem which asks one node to deliver a rumor to all nodes in an unknown network. We present the first protocol for any expander graph G with n nodes such that, the protocol informs every node in O(log n) rounds with high probability, and uses Õ(log n) random bits in total. The runtime of our protocol is tight, and the randomness requirement o...

Anti-rumor dynamics and emergence of the timing threshold on complex network

Anti-rumor dynamics is proposed on the basis of rumor dynamics and the characteristics of anti-rumor dynamics are explored by both mean-field equations and numerical simulations on complex network. The main metrics we study are the timing effect of combating rumor and the identification of influential nodes, which are what an efficient strategy against rumor may concern about. The results indic...

آستانه پخش شایعه در شبکه‌های همگن اجتماعی

The widespread use of the social media has recently created a lot of interest in research on human interactions, and how ideas propagate among individuals. We review the standard rumor model adopted from the literature. These models assume that people spreading the rumor (spreaders) keep spreading it, and those who hear the rumor (ignorant) can become a spreader with a certain probability. We ...

Tight Bounds for Rumor Spreading with Vertex Expansion

We establish a bound for the classic PUSH-PULL rumor spreading protocol on arbitrary graphs, in terms of the vertex expansion of the graph. We show that O(log(n)/α) rounds suffice with high probability to spread a rumor from a single node to all n nodes, in any graph with vertex expansion at least α. This bound matches the known lower bound, and settles the question on the relationship between ...
